We have spent three days preparing for this night. The reconnaissance has revealed that our best chance to approach unseen will be from the southeast. Even so, there will be two guards with a chance to see us as well as hear us when we attempt to cross the palisade. We have discussed a plan and all there is left to do is trust to luck that we can succeed. Not sure how quiet we can be, this new armor seems to make every move I make louder.
They changed guards a couple hours ago, it is time to move. Ookami will lead the way since she will be the first over the wall with the assistance of a spiders grace. Pandora goes next, her slumber hex is our emergency plan in case the closest guard notices us. I’m third in line followed by Corvaan. He has enchanted me with some defensive spells so that I may better handle the upcoming combat. I have to remember to stay close to him or the magic bond will break. Yuri and Trixie serve as our rearguards on the approach.
The beginning is rough but we manage to remain unnoticed. The wall isn’t very far now. I had thought there might be some sort of magical ward or trap but I never dreamed of something like this. Four undead creatures have sprung form the ground amongst us. The fight is over quickly. Yuri has surprised us all and seems to be able to exert control over these abominations. We only had to destroy two and Yuri now has the other two following the group.
Certain that we were heard fighting the zombies, we move to the wall and listen for alerts. Luck must be with us tonight, the guards do not seem to be interested at all in the noise we made. Ookami goes over, secures the rope and tosses the two knotted sections back to us. The spikes on the top are a little hard to navigate, I get stabbed, but Pandora and I are over. We make room for Coorvaan and Trixie. We are heard, the guard in the southwest tower is about to call out when he drops. Pandora used her slumbering hex just in time! Trixie and Ookami move towards the northeast tower. Corvaan, Pandora and I go up the stairs towards the western towers. Yuri and her zombies cross the fence and follow us. The combat in the towers is nothing remarkable. The sleeping guard is dispatched and the northwest guard is slain in one quick slash. Turns out, it was Sneeg. One more reward earned provided we survive to collect it.
I hope that Ookami and Trixie were as fortunate as us. I have heard no alarm. Wait, there is Trixie waving to me. Good, all the guards are down but she seems to want to let me know something. Apparently, there is something or someone very large just below us on the roof to the tower. We will have to remain stealthy as we exit the towers and move around the inside of the wall to the front entrance. Stupid carpenters, they left a board unsecured and I tripped. I’ll be surprised if we don’t have visitors soon. The guy below bought my attempt to answer like the guards, he is no longer telling me to be quiet. That should buy a little time.
After adding some armor to the zombies, we make our way to the front and find Ookami waiting for us there. We have a good view of the inside from here. Three guards are awake. Either they don’t sleep well at night or I have awoken them. No matter, it’s time to bring the assault to them. Ookami and Corvaan fire arrows into the room as I charge the nearest guard. Yuri and her two new bodyguards enter and engage the next guard. We have killed two guards quickly but there are more awake. One grabs a cord and lets loose an owl bear. I hope I have better luck against this one than the last. The zombies are fighting the owl bear beast so I go after the chain puller. I hit him hard. He is very agile. He rolled past me and left the room. We’ll have to watch our backs now.
A very unexpected thing happens next. One of the bandits throws down a lieutenant badge and asks for parley. I haven’t time to chat now so I tell him any help he gives us will help our discussion later. The guards are down, just the owl bear to go. Yuri is vulnerable though, the zombies have been beaten down by the owl bear. As I engage the beast, Trixie and a large human fall from the roof. The owl bear is down and the ex-bandit is attacking the large bandit. Ouch, the large one hits hard. Even worse, an arrow from the back just about knocked me off my feet. The protection magics have helped, but I fear Corvaan is sorely harmed by that arrow. It is the Stag Lord. It takes a little time to finish off the large one with the spiked club but again the ex-bandit helps out. He engages the Stag Lord to keep him from killing me with more arrows.
The fight with the Stag Lord lasts longer than I wanted. He knows his lair well and uses it to heal himself with potions twice before we can kill him. We heal some and go in search of Trixie. The ex-bandit says that she has gone into the cellar. He leads us to the trapdoor that leads below. The place smells of mold and is damp and dark. Trixie goes looking for the old man that is down here. We do not have to wait long, the old man attacks. First, two giant ants appear in the group. We hear him casting but cannot find him. Yuri is covered with spiders and then the entire floor erupts. It hurt some but seems to have been too much for Corvaan as he stumbles. The good news is that the spiders are gone! The bad news, there is a giant wolverine on the ceiling and it looks pissed. It jumps down and begins to unleash its fury. Corvaan and Yuri both go down before we put the beast to rest. The old man was a druid. In death, he changed back to this human form. A little more healing and then we let out a big sigh of relief as the task is over. Time to take note of what we have gained here and send word that the Stag Lord is dead.
