It was good to get away from Stagholm after a year of administrative duties. It was difficult having to listen to the stories that were coming in about the areas to the southeast and southwest of our city and the creatures that inhabit the region. I should be exploring these regions. After all, a general has to know the terrain in which he may have to lead his troops. The short trips into the surrounding wood with Katcha kept me sane but I need a real stretch of the legs. I have to admit that I have gained some amusement from bringing Katcha into the city. The reactions of the people remind me of hunting deer just before you take the shot and they know it is too late to get away. Of course that only lasted until I let some kids pet Katcha. Now I have to keep her out of the city so as not to become too docile. She needs a good long hunt.
We took a short trip to the east in search of the Worg that has brought fear to the farmers and herders. Pandora said they had seen this creature leading a small pack of wolves not too far from the city. The search took most of the day but we found it with 3 wolves. The fight was brief and the wolves ran off once the Worg was dead. We rode back to the city and put the corpse on display to ease the fears of the farmers.
The next day we went off in search of a ruined keep that a group of gnomes told Pandora and Yuri could be found to the southwest. Along the way we wanted to see if that young boy could be found along the edge of the lake. The boy we did not find, instead we came across two giant trolls. They were brutal. Like old times, Corvaan sacrificed his health to help keep me alive for the fight. Luckily we had some people who knew something about trolls. Edtwo, Pandora, Yuri and Nyet ..just about everyone but me…kept damaging them with acid and fire to prevent the trolls from regenerating. How did I not get taught this essential information during my training? One day I may have to look up my old mentor, he seems to have forgotten some important lessons. I’m not saying that the trolls battered us badly, but we returned to Stagholm for a night of rest and healing. We also turned in the troll blood for the reward. Wouldn’t want it to go bad would we?
The next day we set out to the southwest again. Again, no boy was found but a witch instead. I let Yuri and Pandora handle the discussion inside the witches home. I rather hope this person becomes an ally rather than an enemy. It sounded as though she had seen many years and retains the knowledge that comes from so many years of practicing her craft.
The year in the city certainly hurt my woodcraft. The next day we were surprised by six Tatzlwyrms. A small army of giant creatures and they surprise me. I might as well become a warrior and give up the woods if my senses do not perform better in the wilds. Luckily, Ed was up to the task. He had dispatched three of the creatures in the time it took me to finish off the one that attacked me. We are hurting from the fight and settling in for the night as I set down my pen.
Truly, we are traveling the wildlands now. The creatures here have ruled the region without the intervention of civilization for a long time. It will be a difficult chore to make these lands safe.
